Obama tours Panama Canal ahead of Americas Summit

The visit, marked the president's first official act during his trip to Panama, where he'll attend the VII Summit of the Americas with other heads of state.

PANAMA CITY, Panama, April 10 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama toured the Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal Friday morning.

The visit marked the president's first official act during his trip to Panama, where he'll attend the VII Summit of the Americas with other heads of state including Cuba's President Raul Castro.

The ship canal opened to the public on Aug. 15, 1914 and it connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean via the Caribbean Sea.

After the tour, Obama was scheduled to meet with Panamanian president Juan Carlos Varela before the two announce the purchase of several Boing aircrafts by Panamanian company Copa, according to Costa Rican news outlet La Nacion.

The summit will begin Friday night.
