TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A 17-year-old teen shot himself in the head during an impromptu game of Russian roulette at an apartment in Torrence, Calif., officials said Monday.

Sgt. Scott Hoglund, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told NBC Los Angeles that the teen was at the home with eight family members and friends when he pulled out a .38 Special revolver and said he was going to play Russian roulette.

Hoglund said the teen's cousins begged him not to play with the gun.

"The victim did not listen and proceeded to put the gun to his head and pull the trigger," Hoglund said.

The teen, a football player at Carson High School, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy's death was ruled an accident, though authorities are still trying to determine where he obtained the gun.
