MCMINNVILLE, Ore., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A Linfield College sophomore was stabbed to death Saturday night near the McMinnville, Ore., campus in an apparent random attack.
Police found Parker Moore, 20, with multiple stab wounds outside a 7-Eleven across the street from campus. He was airlifted to Oregon Health & Science University, where he died from his injuries.
While officers and paramedics were on the scene, the suspect, Joventino Bermudez Arenas returned to the scene. Witnesses identified Arenas as Moore's attacker.
Yarmhill County Sheriff's Office Capt. Tim Svensen said police confronted Arenas, and shot him when he refused to put down his knife.
Arenas, 33, was taken to Willamette Valley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
"At this point, we can't show any connection between the two individuals," Svenson said, describing the incident as "a completely random act."
The community at the 1,700-student college, where Moore was a linebacker on the football team, was deeply shaken by the stabbing.
Joe Smith, Linfield's head football coach, held a team meeting Sunday to break the news to his players, describing Moore as a leader and "a rock."
"Parker is the young man you want your kids to grow up to be," he said.
Autopsies for both men are scheduled for Monday.
