NASHVILLE, N.C., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A manhunt is underway as authorities search for two gunmen on the loose after a shooting outside the Nash County Courthouse in Nashville, North Carolina, which left two wounded Tuesday morning.

According to Nashville Sheriff Dick Jenkins, the two men who were shot suffered wounds that were not life-threatening. One man was shot in the hand and leg, the other was struck in the back.

One of the victims was on a stretcher at the time, talking to people when he was struck.

"I heard what appeared to be gunshots -- lots of gunshots," said Marie Hinkle, who works nearby. "There was a man down on the side street next to the courthouse. People ran out from the courthouse. They were screaming."

Asked for a reason behind the shooting, Jenkins said, "No clue. I think it's senseless."

Several offices and local schools in the Nashville area were locked down Tuesday as officials searched for the suspects.

State Highway Patrol troopers blocked off roads to stop and search vehicles and pedestrians, as helicopters hovered overhead hoping to spot the fugitives, who may have headed toward highway 64 according to authorities.
