Detroit homicide detective who wore dead man's watch suspended

Detroit homicide detectives decided to reopen a case while the officer originally in charge was at a training session -- allegedly wearing the victim's expensive watch.

DETROIT, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A Detroit homicide detective who wore a dead man's wristwatch to a training session in Idaho has been suspended, officials said.

The watch, an expensive German make, was found on an unidentified homicide victim several months ago. While Sgt. Alex Vinson was in Idaho, his colleagues decided to take another look at the unsolved case and found that the watch in the property room was a cheaper model than the one photographed at the time of the homicide, Police Chief James Craig said.

Vinson was ordered back to Detroit, read his Miranda rights and removed from duty, Craig added. The case has been referred to the district attorney.

Police have recovered the German watch with help from the FBI, Craig said.

The homicide is still unsolved, and police have not identified the victim. Vinson was the officer in charge of the original investigation.
