BELL GARDENS, Calif., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Just a few days after Bell Gardens, Calif., mayor Daniel Crespo was shot and killed during what police called a domestic disturbance, the attorney for Crespo's wife made a startling announcement: she was the victim of domestic abuse.

Eber Bayona said Levette Crespo suffered an "intolerable home life" during a news conference on Thursday.

Deputies briefly detained Levette Crespo Tuesday after shooting and killing her husband inside of their home, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

They also said no arrests would be made at this time.

The couple's 19-year-old son tried to stop the fight and suffered facial injuries according to detectives.

That was when Levette Crespo got the firearm and shot her husband multiple times in the torso deputies said.

Crespo was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Daniel Crespo's brother said Bayona's accusations are false and the attorney is trying to make his brother look bad.

He also added that he wants his brother's wife to be charged with second degree murder.
