PHOENIX, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A massive manhunt shut down the busiest terminal -- Terminal 4 -- at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for three hours Thursday afternoon.

Airlines affected included American Airlines/US Airways, Southwest Airlines, Air Canada, WestJet and Volaris.

The lockdown caused a ground stop at the airport as well as lengthy travel delays.

It all began around 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon after a shooting at a gas station in Tempe, Ariz.

According to authorities, a red Pontiac Grand Am fled the shooting scene leading police on a high speed chase that ended at the airport.

Shortly after arriving at the airport a man and a woman were arrested in connection with the shooting in Tempe.

During the manhunt, only flights that were in the process of boarding were allowed to leave Terminal 4. Incoming flights were allowed to land, but passengers had to stay on the plane.

The airport also asked passengers whose planes were departing out of that terminal to not come to the airport.

Passengers on an airport shuttle bus were wondering if they would make their flights.

"They stopped at Terminal 3 and told us to get off and didn't tell us why," said Lynn Gerber. Gerber had a flight on US Airways.
