CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 22 (UPI) -- A former Baptist pastor in North Carolina committed suicide Saturday when police attempted to arrest him for child sex charges.
Michael Reece Mullis, former pastor of Near Calvary Baptist Church in Concord, shot himself with a .357 magnum pistol when Rowan County deputies arrived to serve Mullis arrest warrants for taking indecent liberties with a child -- who is now a woman in her twenties.
Mullis answered the door in pajamas and, when told of the arrest warrant, asked to put his shoes on. Although a deputy followed Mullis to the bedroom, the disgraced pastor sprinted ahead of authorities, rushing to his bedroom and attempting to shut the door.
The deputy who followed Mullis blocked the door from shutting and witnessed as the 63-year-old fatally shot himself in the head.
"The case is over," Concord Police Maj. Gary Hatley told WSOC. "As far as for us, we'll never get to serve the warrants."
