NEW YORK, June 9 (UPI) -- Barbara Walters formally retired from her decades-long broadcast career back in May, but she'll return to ABC News for a special interview with Peter Rodger, the father of Santa Barbara killer Elliot Rodger.

The interview will air as an upcoming special edition of 20/20, the network announced Monday.

An ABC News rep told Variety that Rodger had specially requested Walters.

Rodger's 22-year-old son, Elliot, killed seven people, including himself, in a shooting and stabbing rampage in Isla Vista, Calif., on May 23. Elliot left behind a 140-page manifesto referring to his planned "Day of Retribution."
