ORLAND, Calif., April 11 (UPI) -- A collision between a bus carrying high school students on a college visit and a tractor-trailer in northern California has killed at least 10 people.

The California Highway Patrol said both drivers are among the dead. At least 32 people were injured.

Both the truck and bus caught fire after the crash.

Investigators said a Fed-Ex tractor-trailer headed south on Interstate 5 about 100 miles north of Sacramento crossed the highway median, hitting the bus head-on.

Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., almost 300 miles north of San Francisco, said the bus was bringing students from the Los Angeles area to its "Spring Preview" on Friday. University officials said the event, held for the past 20 years, brings low-income students and those who would be the first in their families to attend college to the campus for a two-day taste of college life.

Most of the dead were believed to be high school students.

CHP Officer Tracy Hoover said many of the injuries were "cuts, contusions, bumps, minor burns."

"I know there was one person when we arrived on scene that was on fire," Hoover added.

Humboldt said three buses, two from the Los Angeles area and one from Fresno, were bringing high school students to the university. The other two arrived safely.

"Our hearts go out to those who have been affected, and we are here to support them, and their families, in any way possible," President Rollin Richmond said in a statement.
