State Senator Pete Kelly, R-Alaska, would like to reduce fetal alcohol syndrome by putting state-funded pregnancy test kiosks in bars.
Kelly believes that if women have access to pregnancy tests in bars, they will test and find they should "act responsibly" before engaging in binge drinking. He doesn't believe in women's access to contraception because that encourages binge drinking and consequently a "plague" of fetal alcohol syndrome.
"If you have people who are binge drinking or chronic drinkers, we're hesitant to say use birth control as your protection against fetal alcohol syndrome because, as I say, binge drinking is a problem. If you think you can take birth control, and then binge drink, and hope not to produce a fetal alcohol syndrome baby." said Kelly.
He also added when asked specifically about access to contraception, "Birth control is for people who don’t necessarily want to act responsibly."
Alaska Democratic Party Executive Director Kay Brown responded to Kelly's proposal saying, "Pete Kelly's going all out with the War on Women, but from his defensive comments it looks like Alaska women many be winning."
