Brig. Gen. Sinclair pleads guilty to inappropriate relationships

FORT BRAGG, N.C., March 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair pleaded guilty at his court-martial Thursday to several charges, including an illicit affair with a female Army captain.

Sinclair, one of the highest ranking officers to face a court-martial also pleaded guilty to possession of pornography, impeding an investigation and pressuring female officers to send him nude photos of themselves, the Los Angeles Times reported.

He pleaded not guilty to more serious charges of forcing the captain to perform oral sex, groping her, committing sodomy, engaging in public sex and threatening to kill the captain and her family if she revealed their affair.

It is up to Col. James L. Pohl, the military judge presiding over Sinclair's court-martial at Fort Bragg, N.C., to accept the pleas, the Times said.

Sinclair, 51, married with two children, has acknowledged having an affair with his accuser, who is 17 years younger than he, but said the affair was consensual.

Sinclair could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted of the most serious charges. He was relieved of duty as deputy commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after his accuser came forward in 2012.
