NTSB issues helicopter safety alerts

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has issued two safety alerts for helicopter pilots, urging more simulator training and proper maintenance.

The NTSB said there have been 1,500 helicopter accidents in the last 10 years, noting many come from use of helicopters as transportation for critically ill or injured patients and in search-and-rescue operations.

"Implementing recommended safety improvements that address helicopter operations can mitigate risk for thousands of pilots and passengers each year," said NTSB Chairwoman Deborah A.P. Hersman.

The agency produced two online videos encouraging helicopter pilots to train themselves on safety measures and other best practices in the industry.
