College student dies of injuries suffered in Utah avalanche

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A Brigham Young University coed injured in a weekend avalanche while snowshoeing in Utah has died after being taken off life support, authorities said.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office said Ashleigh Nicole Cox, 21, was with several people near Tribble Fork Reservoir in American Fork Canyon when the snow slide occurred about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The 50-foot-long avalanche pushed her into a creek and she was trapped for about 40 minutes before she was pulled out. Cox was not breathing and had no pulse when emergency personnel reached her but they got her heart beating again and she was taken to a hospital.

However, Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon she was removed from life support Sunday afternoon.
