COOKEVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A gunman wounded a woman in the basement of a church near Cookeville, Tenn., Sunday before killing himself, police said.

Putnam County authorities said Tommy Meadows, 64, of Bloomington Springs shot the unidentified woman in the abdomen about 9 a.m. at the Double Springs Community Church west of Cookeville before turning his gun on himself, the (Cookeville) Herald-Citizen reported.

The woman, whose name hadn't been released, was in critical after surgery at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, the newspaper said.

"All we know at this time is that the man's wife or ex-wife was inside the building with her sister at the time," Sheriff David Andrews said.

"We are still interviewing witnesses and working the crime scene at this time."

The sheriff said Meadows and the two women were believed to be the only people in the church at the time of the shooting.
