BOSTON, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Lawyers for a Massachusetts prison inmate who won the right to have a sex change operation said the state has been too slow to schedule the procedure.
The former Robert Kosilek, who goes by the name Michelle, is serving a life sentence for killing his wife, Cheryl, in 1990. Kosilek sued the state, saying he suffers from gender dysphoria and a judge agreed the condition merits a sex change operation -- one the state will have to provide Kosilek at taxpayer cost.
Sixteen months after the verdict, Kosilek's lawyers said the Massachusetts Department of Corrections still has not set a date for the surgery to take place and has failed to make other preparations, as well, the Boston Herald reported.
"Regardless of whether the defendant attempts to appeal this case further, its duty to continue preparing for Kosilek's surgery remains," the lawyers wrote in a Tuesday filing in U.S. district court seeking a conference "as soon as possible" with corrections officials to move along the process.
