SHREWSBURY, N.J., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Federal regulators shut down a New Jersey slaughterhouse after the Humane Society posted video showing conscious calves on the kill line, the society said.
The society announced Monday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had suspended operations at the Catelli Bros. plant in Shrewbury, N.J., the Asbury Park Press reported. The company's headquarters are in Collingswood, N.J.
The Humane Society said the video was shot by an undercover operative last year.
It showed conscious calves hung upside down on a conveyor line and another calf being prodded to get it to walk.
Catelli Bros. is a major supplier of veal and lamb to restaurants and retailers.
Under federal regulations, animals are required to be unconscious as they are moved to slaughter.
Tony Catelli, the company's president, said it is committed to treating the animals it slaughters humanely. He said Catelli Bros. is cooperating with the USDA.
