Colo. deputy sheriff killed in head-on collision

LAKEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A Jefferson County, Colo., sheriff's deputy was killed Sunday when his motorcycle collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The collision occurred just after 10 a.m. MST on Highway 93 near Arvada, northwest of Denver, where the deputy -- whose name was not reported -- was traveling northbound on his Harley-Davidson patrol motorcycle. As he entered a curve, an SUV driven by Kenneth Hosch, 83, of Golden, Colo., crossed a double-yellow line and collided head-on with the motorcycle, the CSP said in a news release.

The deputy was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hosch was transported to a hospital for treatment of what police described as minor injuries.

No charges were immediately brought against Hosch.

The highway was closed following the collision.
