Boy survives 140-foot fall down well

GREER, S.C., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A South Carolina boy who fell 140 feet into a well was rescued suffering from a broken arm and hypothermia, emergency workers say.

Emery Howard, 11, and a friend, Larry Lindsey, 12, were trespassing at an empty house in Greer when Emery fell, WHNS-TV reported. Greenville County Sheriff's Lt. Tim Ridgeway said the well was on the back porch of the home.

Larry said he tried to use a rope to help his friend, but Emery was unable to grasp it because of his arm. The Lake Covington Fire Department carried out the rescue.

Ridgeway said Emery was lucky.

"If it had been an adult, it'd probably kill him," Ridgeway said. "But a child his age has bigger energy to fight a little bit more, because he was talking the whole time to us. He told us about his injuries and everything. So he was a strong young man."

Investigators said the owner of the house, which was fenced off, could decide to bring charges against the boys.
