Winning bid for George Zimmerman painting tops $100,000

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Bidding closed Saturday on eBay at more than $100,000 for a painting by George Zimmerman, the Florida man acquitted of shooting and killing Trayvon Martin.

The bidder, whose identity was not revealed, agreed to pay $100,099.99 for the painting, which comes with a pledge from Zimmerman of personal delivery, the Los Angeles Times reported. Bidding started last week at 99 cents.

The painting in oils is 24 inches by 18 inches and shows a blue U.S. flag and words from the Declaration of Independence. The listing was "therealgeorgz."

"Everyone has been asking what I have been doing with myself," Zimmerman said in his listing. "I found a creative way to express myself, my emotions and the symbols that represent my experiences. My art work allows me to reflect, providing a therapeutic outlet and allows me to remain indoors :-)"

Zimmerman, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., was acquitted this year of killing Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, as Martin walked to a relative's home from a convenience store.

More recently, Zimmerman has been the target of police domestic violence calls, although he currently faces no charges.

Zimmerman received messages of support on eBay. His painting has also spawned a couple of other offerings, one that reproduces his painting and another showing a similar flag with a bag of Skittles on top, representing the candy Martin had purchased.
