NEW YORK, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A group of New York State Republicans said it wants real estate mogul Donald Trump to run for governor, and will visit his office Wednesday to persuade him.

State Assemblyman David DiPietro admitted, though, they recognize their plea to convince Trump to run against Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo in 2014 is a long shot.

"As Republicans, we need to cast a pretty wide net and find the best candidate to beat Governor Cuomo, and we think Mr. Trump can beat Mr. Cuomo," DiPietro said.

Trump has considered running for public office in the past but has never been a candidate. Cuomo is also a commanding favorite to win re-election in the overwhelmingly Democratic state, the New York Daily News noted Wednesday.
