Fourth building in Detroit's Heidelberg Project damaged in fire

DETROIT, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A fourth building in the so-called Heidelberg Project in Detroit was damaged by fire early Thursday, fire officials said.

Arson Unit Capt. Charles Simms said "The War House," a vacant home, was found on fire about 5:35 a.m., the Detroit Free Press reported.

A security guard saw someone running from the scene, Simms said.

Seven abandoned homes were part of the initial Heidelberg Project in 1986. Artist Tyree Guyton decorated the buildings with colorful designs and found objects.

An eighth home, the House of Soul, which is covered in vinyl LPs, was added later.

That building was destroyed by fire Nov. 12. The building that burned Thursday was adjacent to it.

A fire a week ago destroyed the Penny House. The building known as the Obstruction of Justice house burned Oct. 5, Heidelberg Project spokeswoman Katie Hearn said.

The fire at the Penny House has been ruled arson and is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI.

The group has been trying to raise money to increase security at the project.
