Investigators said the shooting occurred late Saturday night at a birthday party. More than 100 people, mostly high school students, were at the scene when the gunfire erupted.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia said at least one of the gunshots was celebratory and not directed at anyone in particular.

Some in attendance were injured in a rush to escape the gunfire, and others were injured as they pushed against a garage door attempting to escape the home, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported.

One of the victims killed was Qu'eric Danariu Richardson, 17, deputies said.

A Katy Independent School District spokesman said Richardson was a junior at Morton Ranch High School in Katy.
