Arrest of New York man linked to 18-year-old convicted terrorist

NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- A Long Island, N.Y., man was arrested Friday for allegedly conspiring with a high school student and others to support a branch of al-Qaida, officials say.

Marcos Alonso Zea has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, WNBC-TV, New York, reported.

FBI New York Director George Venizelos said Zea attempted to fly to Yemen in 2011 to provide money and other resources to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. He was stopped by British customs agents and sent back to the United States.

Zea then allegedly taught 18-year-old student Justin Kaliebe how to travel to Yemen to wage "violent jihad" and gave him money.

Kaliebe was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in January as he tried to board a flight. He pleaded guilty in February to attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

Zea was questioned by authorities in January, his mother, Sandra Zea, said. He told them he knew nothing "because he did not do anything," she said.
