Boy stowaway returned to Minneapolis, awaiting hearing

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A 9-year-old boy who managed to sneak onto a flight to Las Vegas has returned to Minneapolis and is now awaiting a child protection hearing.

The boy sneaked through security and aboard a Delta flight from Minneapolis to Las Vegas Oct. 3 without a ticket or a boarding pass.

His father spoke to the press last week and said that the boy had a pattern of running away and committing acts that would be considered criminal if he was older, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. The man, who covered his face at the press conference to protect his anonymity, said he sought government help with the child in the past, but was told the boy needed to do something worse than running away before authorities would step in.

The Hennepin County attorney's office Friday filed a petition "for a child in need of protective services," and scheduled a hearing in the case for Tuesday.

Now, a court will decide whether the boy will be removed from the care of his parents, or if he will receive mental and behavioral health treatment to address his behavioral problems.
