Jared Remy maintains innocence in jailhouse interview

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Jared Remy, son of Boston Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy maintained in a jailhouse interview he's innocent despite allegations he killed his girlfriend.

The younger Remy was arrested after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, to death outside their Boston-area home in August. He submitted to a 30-minute jailhouse interview with the Boston Herald, denying the charges and expressing optimism at his acquittal.

"No. That's ridiculous," Remy said when asked if he killed Martel. "How dumb would I have to be? I loved her. I still love her."

Remy was charged with the killing two days after being released from jail on a previous assault charge. Neighbors have told police they saw Remy stabbing Martel outside their home and tried to intervene before police arrived.

He said he has declined to see his parents since his arrest though he said he's spoken with his father by telephone.

"I'm just trying to get adjusted here," Remy said. "I'm sure they're not thrilled with me right now."

Remy's 5-year-old daughter remains in state custody. Both the Remy and Martel families have sought to gain custody of the girl.
