ITHACA, N.Y., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Freshmen on the Cornell lacrosse team were forced to drink beer, sometimes until they vomited, officials at the upstate New York university said Monday.
The university announced Friday the entire fall season had been suspended because of alcohol-related hazing. On Monday, officials released more details, saying it involved what was known as "keg races," The Ithaca Independent reported.
Upperclassmen on the team tied the freshmen into a circle with string for a competition on who could drink the most beer, officials said. The races were symptomatic of "a culture within this group of treating new members as less than equals," the university said in a statement.
Instead of competing, members of the lacrosse team will attend workshops and classes on hazing and its consequences. The university said players subjected to the hazing will be given appropriate support.
