NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A telephoned bomb threat caused massive traffic jams Wednesday in the Norfolk, Va., area as state police inspected trucks entering tunnels.
Traffic was backed up at both the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, The Virginian-Pilot reported. The line of cars and trucks trying to enter the Hampton Roads cross sometimes stretched for 8 miles.
The threat was made to state police just before 8 a.m. in a phone call from a man who said only that there was a bomb somewhere in the area. Police in the area were already on alert because of the 12th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
"Any kind of threat is taken very seriously, especially one of this nature on this day," Corinne Geller, a state police spokeswoman, said.
K-9 troopers from Richmond were brought in to help with the truck inspections.
