Arizona high court sets October execution date for 71-year-old inmate

PHOENIX, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The Arizona Supreme Court says it has scheduled Edward Schad, a 71-year-old death row prisoner, to be put to death Oct. 9.

It's the second execution date for Schad, The Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stayed his March execution over questions about whether Schad had received effective legal representation. The appeals court resolved those questions in June, clearing the way for a new execution date.

Schad was sentenced to death in 1995 in the 1978 murder of Lorimer Grove, 74. Grove's body was found alongside an Arizona highway several days after he left on a trip to see a relative in Washington state.

Schad's first conviction in 1979 was overturned.
