WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- CVS pharmacies in most U.S. states are no longer requiring photo identification to purchase nail polish remover, officials said.
CVS notified stores Wednesday that the rule change would go into effect Thursday, CVS director of public relations Mike DeAngelis told CBS News.
"We are committed to ensuring customer convenience while appropriately complying with regulations in our business," DeAngelis said.
Previously, customers had to show a photo ID to buy nail polish remover because it contains acetone, which can be used to make methamphetamine.
CVS will still require photo IDs for acetone products in Hawaii, and for iodine products in California, Hawaii and West Virginia in accordance with state laws, DeAngelis said. Iodine is also used to manufacture methamphetamine.
