The fire spread so quickly, some residents didn't have time to evacuate, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

"Definitely a fast-moving fire," Capt. Lucas Spelman of CalFire said. "There was a situation where people did have to shelter in place."

Four firefighters and one civilian were injured by the blaze, KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, reported Thursday.

"The civilian -- very, very tragically -- was very badly burned," said CalFire Riverside Chief John R. Hawkins, adding the victim had full-thickness burns "from head to toe."

Some 1,500 people were ordered to evacuate their homes Wednesday and shelters were set up at Hemet and Beaumont high schools, KNBC said.

The blaze was 10 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon.
