Fake cop charged with abusing inmate during jail visit

NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- A New York man is accused of using a fake badge to get into a city jail where allegedly he groped and threatened an inmate, police say.

Matthew Matagarno pretended to be with the police department's Intelligence Unit to gain entry to the Manhattan Detention Center, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Once inside, he ordered an inmate to strip and be searched, court records indicate.

The attack allegedly occurred Feb. 27 when Matagarno flashed a gold badge and spent more than seven hours in the jail, talking to inmates and passing out cigarettes.

He had already been indicted on other charges, including burglary, criminal impersonation and promoting criminal contraband in connection with that incident. The latest charges were added July 8 after the inmate he allegedly attacked filed a complaint.

Matagarno is a convicted sex offender who has served time in prison for sex crimes and other offenses, records show.
