MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev., July 12 (UPI) -- The Carpenter 1 wildfire in Nevada was 45 percent contained after the region was doused by rain, officials said.
The fire had increased to about 28,000 acres Thursday in the Mount Charleston region, but heavy rain near the Spring Mountains, along with increased humidity and cloud cover, helped stop the flames, said Jon Kohn, a spokesman for the Great Basin Incident Management Team.
More than 1,300 emergency personnel were responding to the blaze Thursday, the Las Vegas Sun reported.
Officials said the wildfire destroyed six structures and 6,000 feet of phone lines. Residents won't have phone service for the next several days, but water electricity and the Internet should still be working, the Sun said.
Smoke from the fire caused the closure Thursday of hiking trails in Red Rock Canyon and officials advised residents to stay indoors, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The situation improved later Thursday, and the air quality was labeled "moderate."
Firefighters said they expect the wildfire to be fully contained by July 19.
