Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of secretary of state, hospitalized

NANTUCKET, Mass., July 7 (UPI) -- Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of the U.S. secretary of state, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Sunday in Massachusetts, a hospital spokesman said.

A person identified as someone close to the family told The Boston Globe Heinz Kerry, 74, was suffered an unspecified medical condition during the afternoon while her husband, Secretary of State John Kerry, was home.

The person said an ambulance left the home about 4 p.m. EDT.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital spokesman Noah Brown confirmed Heinz Kerry was at the hospital but wouldn't disclose the nature of her illness, the newspaper said.

"She was brought in, in critical but stable condition, and that is currently how ... her condition still remains," Brown said. "At this point, we are determining the next phase of her care, be that either in our facility on the island, or on the mainland."

Heinz Kerry, heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune who previously was married to the late U.S. Sen. H. John Heinz III, was treated for breast cancer in 2009.
