LANSING, Mich., July 1 (UPI) -- The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a probe is underway of Michigan's practice of leasing passenger planes to Michigan State University.
The initial review by the FAA's Grand Rapids, Mich., office could trigger a formal investigation by the FAA, the Lansing State-Journal reported Monday. The university and the Michigan Department of Transportation are involved in the review.
The newspaper said it reviewed trip logs for the four state-owned planes and found MSU men's basketball coach Tom Izzo and MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio were among the most frequent fliers.
Izzo traveled by taxpayer-funded planes at least 55 times in the five-year period and Dantonio at least 47, the newspaper said.
The analysis showed Michigan State employees and guests used state planes at least 150 times, the third-most among state entities after the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan State Police.
