OXON HILL, Md., May 30 (UPI) -- Thirteen-year-old Arvind Mahankali of Bayside Hills, N.Y., won the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday when he correctly spelled "knaidel."

Mahankali won the top honors in the 86th annual competition held in Oxon Hill, Md., in his fourth try at the national level, NPR reported. He came in third the past two years and ninth in 2010.

Correctly spelling knaidel, a type of dumpling, earned him $30,000 in cash and prizes, and a cup-shaped trophy.

NPR noted Mahankali is the 10th winner in the past 14 years to be of Indian descent.
