PRINCETON, N.J., May 13 (UPI) -- Support for same-sex marriage has been at 50 percent or higher since 2011, a Gallup poll indicates.
Currently, 53 percent of Americans say they believe laws should recognize same-sex marriages, while 45 percent said they do not feel that way, a Gallup poll indicated.
In 2011, support for same-sex marriage grew to 53 percent, at which point 45 percent of poll respondents said they did not think laws should recognize same-sex marriages.
Since then, support for same-sex marriage been above 50 percent for three consecutive years of the poll, Gallup said.
Gallup first started tracking Americans' thoughts on gay marriage in 1996 when just 27 percent of respondents said they support same-sex marriage while 68 percent said they were opposed.
The most recent poll was conducted May 2-7. Gallup interviewed 1,535 adults and said the poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
