Officer, suspect killed in Jackson, Miss.
JACKSON, Miss., April 4 (UPI) -- A shooting in the police headquarters in Jackson, Miss., Thursday left an officer and a murder suspect dead, authorities said.
The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger reported the slain officer was Detective Eric Smith. The dead suspect's name had not been released.
"This is an extraordinarily tragic situation, and it's tough for each of us," Jackson city spokesman Chris Mims told reporters in front of the police department. "Especially today, the Jackson Police Department, who put their lives on the line every day."
The newspaper said the shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time. Police surrounded and locked down the building.
Chief Rebecca Coleman said officers had arrested the murder suspect during the afternoon "and he was being interviewed on the third floor."
"Later, we heard that shots had been fired, and upon our arrival, we found the suspect is deceased and we have a police officer who is deceased," the chief said. "That's all the information we have at this time."
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said the agency was sending its crime scene unit and investigators to the scene.
"It did involve one of their officers, that's why MBI is getting involved," he said.
Ax used to kill 9 women, girls in India
RAIPUR, India, April 4 (UPI) -- A man described as "reportedly mentally unstable" allegedly killed nine girls and women with an ax Thursday in India, authorities said.
Pandu Nageshia, 35,was jailed in the massacre of four women and five girls, ages 2-65, in the village of Barhatola in Chhattisgarh's impoverished Balrampur district, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.
"It's brutal killings by a man who is reportedly mentally unstable," Balrampur district collector C.R. Prasanna told IANS by phone.
"I am too in a state of shock after visiting the village and watching dead bodies scattered outside a house where the deceased belonging to two to three families had assembled as their male family members had gone out on daily work."
Police Superintendent G.S. Darro, quoting witnesses, said Nageshia allegedly went on the killing spree about 1:30 p.m. It wasn't known what motivated the suspect.
India building collapse kills at least 10
THANE, India, April 4 (UPI) -- A building under construction in Thane, India, collapsed Thursday evening, killing at least 10 people, emergency officials said.
Civic Disaster Control officials said more than 55 other people were injured when the seven-story structure toppled, the Press Trust of India reported.
Among the dead was a pregnant woman, identified as Shakila Imran Siddiqui, Thane civic officials said.
The cause of the collapse was not reported.
Couple sentenced for deadly fire
NOTTINGHAM, England, April 4 (UPI) -- A British judge told Mick Philpott he has "no moral compass" as she sentenced him to life in prison Thursday for setting a fire that killed six of his children.
Philpott, 56, who was convicted of six counts of manslaughter, was given a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years before release, The Guardian reported. His wife Mairead, 32, and a friend, Paul Mosley, 46, were each sentenced to 17 years and must serve at least half the time.
Judge Kate Thirlwall, who presided over the trial in Nottingham Crown Court, said Philpott, who has fathered 17 children with several women, has a long history of violence. She said he used his 1978 conviction for stabbing a woman who broke up with him to terrorize other women.
"You are a disturbingly dangerous man. Your guiding principle is what Mick Philpott wants he gets," the judge said. "You have no moral compass."
Thirlwall said Philpott did not intend the deaths of Duwayne, 13, Jade, 10, John, 9, Jack, 8, Jesse, 6, and Jayden, 5. Prosecutors said Philpott and Mairead set their house in Derby on fire in an effort to frame his ex-girlfriend, who had recently moved out.
Members of Philpott's family cheered the sentence. Shouts of "Die, Mick, die," could be heard in court.
