Utah captures notorious 'Mountain Man'

MANTI, Utah, April 3 (UPI) -- A notorious fugitive known by the moniker of "Mountain Man" has been arrested in central Utah after a 72-hour operation, a local sheriff said.

Sheriff Brian Nielson of Sanpete County said it took a force of 40 law enforcement officers to capture Troy James Knapp, 45, who has been terrorizing Utah cabin owners for more than seven years, the Deseret News of Salt Lake City reported Wednesday.

Nielson said Knapp was "severely outgunned" by officers from at least seven counties as well as representatives from the state and the U.S. Marshals Service.

A survivalist, Knapp is suspected of breaking into dozens of cabins in southern and central Utah. He faces a total of 18 criminal charges of three counties.

Knapp's capture came after he revealed his identity to a group of people looking for shed antlers on central Utah's Ferron Mountain, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
