Gang threatens reprisal for shooting

FRESNO, Calif., April 1 (UPI) -- Police in Fresno, Calif., said gang members are threatening retaliation after officers shot a man suspected of a gang-related homicide.

Police said two officers tried pulling over the suspect. When the man drove away, police pursued and eventually rammed their patrol car into the unidentified suspect's vehicle.

He fled on foot, with the officers in pursuit. Police said they shot and injured the man when it appeared he was arming himself. He was found to be in possession of a handgun, The Fresno (Calif.) Bee said Monday.

The shooting has prompted known gang members in the city to call for retaliation against police. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said officers are taking the threat seriously and have increased their presence, including SWAT team deployment, in gang territory.

The two officers involved in Sunday's shooting have been placed on administrative leave for their safety, the newspaper said.
