Man arrested for stealing from Girl Scouts

March 5, 2013 at 1:42 PM

PHELAN, Calif., March 5 (UPI) -- A California man was arrested after allegedly being caught on camera stealing $550 in Girl Scout cookie sale proceeds.

The girls were selling cookies outside a Phelan, Calif., grocery and were packing up for the afternoon, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's office said. One of the girls momentarily left the day's proceeds in a bag on a table when Colin Sawyer, 20, rode by on a skateboard and allegedly swiped the cash, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, said Tuesday.

Sawyer was able to escape despite the girls chasing him, but he wasn't able to evade store security cameras that caught several images showing his face.

The footage was released to local media and Sawyer was identified and arrested within hours, the sheriff's department said.
