Couple dies, baby survives crash

NEW YORK, March 3 (UPI) -- An Orthodox Jewish couple died in a car crash in New York City as they rushed to a hospital to deliver their first child -- who survived, authorities said.

Nachman and Raizi Glauber, both 21, were in a black taxi on their way to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan just after midnight Sunday when the cab was struck by a a BMW in Brooklyn, the New York Post reported.

Nachman Glauber was taken to Beth Israel Hospital and Raizi, who was seven-months pregnant, was taken to Bellevue. They were both pronounced dead at their respective hospitals, but doctors were able to deliver their premature son. He is expected to survive.

The cab driver was also transported to Bellevue where he was listed in stable condition.

The driver and passenger of the BMW fled the scene. Police are still looking for them.

"It's a terrible, terrible tragedy. They were going for their first child. There are no words. I don't even know what to say," said community leader Rabbi Bernard Freilich.
