Va. man sentenced for killing teen brother

CHESAPEAKE, Va., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A woman was unsuccessful in convincing a Virginia judge not to send her 21-year-old son to prison for killing her 16-year-old son.

Speaking from the witness box in Chesapeake, Kim Casper said her older son Jeremy Casper never meant to kill Jordan Casper.

"He was like a dad to Jordan, a best friend, a mentor," she said. "I know he will punish himself far worse than anyone else,"

A felon who should not have had a gun, Jeremy was sentenced Monday to the mandatory minimum of five years in prison.

Court documents said the shooting occurred at 2 a.m. on April 11, 2011. The brothers and a friend were drinking and passing around the gun. The shooting occurred when the friend left the room.

Jeremy Casper, who left the scene after the shooting, said it was an accident.
