Ariz. highway closed due to sink hole

PAGE, Ariz., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- An Arizona highway will be closed indefinitely because a 120-foot stretch has sunk nearly 4 feet, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

U.S. Highway 89 is the only highway that directly connects Page to Flagstaff and the Valley; however, just south of Page in the Navajo Nation, the highway has been sinking, The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, reported.

Dustin Krugel of ADOT said the sink hole is possibly from a geological condition, however, it is too early to determine the exact cause.

At least two collisions were reported as a result of the sink hole, the state Department of Public Safety said.

The road will be repaired as soon as officials determine the extent of the damage, said Timothy Tait of the Arizona Department of Transportation. Until then, the highway will be close.
