Find sex change docs for convicted killer

BOSTON, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Massachusetts has found six surgeons willing to perform sex reassignment surgery on convicted killer Michelle L. Kosilek, a federal court affidavit indicates.

The affidavit filed by Correction Commission Luis S. Spenser said the state was unable to locate any surgeons in either Massachusetts or New York who were qualified and willing to do the surgery, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Spenser said Massachusetts had to do a nationwide search to locate the six surgeons.

The names of the surgeons and the facilities they work at have been redacted from the affidavit under the orders of U.S. District Court Judge Mark Wolf.

Wolf ruled last year Massachusetts is violating Kosilek's constitutional rights by failing to provide sex reassignment surgery at taxpayers' expense.

Kosilek, who was born Robert Kosilek, was sentenced to life in prison in 1993 for the strangulation death of his wife Cheryl in 1990.

Kosilek appeared in women's clothing at the trial.
