Pa. birth certificates list wrong father

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A software glitch led to birth certificates for about 500 Pennsylvania babies being printed with the wrong father's name, state officials said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Vital Statistics said the incorrect birth certificates were printed with the entirely wrong names because the new electronic system it has installed was programed incorrectly to pull the father's name from the wrong field in the database, The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown reported Tuesday.

Holli Senior, a department spokeswoman, said information contained in the database is correct -- only the printed versions are wrong. The department has identified all the children affected, and sent a letter and postage-paid envelope to return the certificates and receive a new one that correctly lists the child's father.

It was unclear Tuesday whether the incorrect names identified a specific individual or were first and last names pulled at random.
