Woman admits to faking cancer

ONTARIO, N.Y., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- A New York state woman accused of faking cancer to defraud donors pleaded guilty to grand larceny and other charges.

Melissa Jones of Canandaigua pleaded guilty Wednesday in Ontario Town Court to two counts of third-degree grand larceny and two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, The Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle reported Thursday.

Jones allegedly forged two letters purported to be from doctors saying she had breast cancer and used her false disease to raise $20,000 to $30,000 from donors.

Jones faces 1 2/3 to five years in prison when she is scheduled to be sentenced March 27.
