Convicted killer seeks name change

BROCKTON, Mass., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- At a Brockton, Mass., hearing, a convicted child killer requested a name change and heard from his victim's father for the first time since the conviction.

Charles Jaynes, 37, serving a life sentence for the 1997 murder of 10-year-old Jeffrey Curley, petitioned a name change in Brockton District Court Tuesday, asking Probate Court Judge Catherine Sabaitis to legally change his name to Manasseh-Invictus Auric Thutmose V.

Jaynes claimed, in the hourlong session, the name has Wiccan religious connotations, but the organization Representatives of Wicca said it had no understanding of the name and had previously disassociated itself from Jaynes, the (Brockton) Enterprise reported.

Before the judge concluded the hearing, noting she has 30 days to consider the request, Robert Curley, the murdered boy's father, was given time to address the court, saying of Jaynes, "This is what this guy is all about. He's a con man and he's dangerous. He's not a dummy but he's not as smart as he thinks he is, and he's not fooling me."

It was the first time, since Jaynes' trial in 1997, that Robert Curley had seen his son's killer, the newspaper noted.
