KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A man who drugged girls to create pornography called for legal pedophilia as he was sentenced to 245 years in U.S. prison.
In court documents, psychologists said James Phillips Edwards, 63, plans to spend his time in prison -- almost certainly the rest of his life -- trying to build a pedophile movement, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported. During his sentencing hearing Tuesday in federal court in Kansas City, Edwards called the laws against pedophilia "unjust."
"He is more interested in changing society's views regarding sex with children than controlling his own deviant interests and behavior," said Kent Franks, a psychologist who reviewed the case for the prosecution.
Edwards pleaded no contest last year to charges that he used sleeping pills to drug 13 girls during a four-year period at his Kansas City home. They were featured in a videotape he titled "How to Molest Young Girls" discovered on his computer.
"Your conduct is beyond comprehension to the average person," U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple said. "It is my belief you cannot live in society."
While Edwards suggested his arrest was unfair, he also said he feels "deep regret" for harming the victims. Those victims who were described in court were 11, 12 and 13 when molested.
"I got the message and I will never re-offend," Edwards said. "I still have these feelings. They're never going to go away."
