Officials of the U.S. Forestry Service said the fire should be out by Tuesday evening.

Firefighters had contained 5 percent of the fire by 5 p.m. Monday, but not before all lanes of the interstate were closed in the area.

The blaze was being worked by about 450 personnel from the Forestry Service and personnel form the San Bernardino County fire and sheriff's departments.

Some 54 engines, five air tankers, five helicopters, six water tenders, five bulldozers and 12 hand crews were involved in containing the fire, the report said.

The California Highway Patrol reported two right lanes of the highway in either direction were still closed early Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles Times said.

The flames were fed by hot dry Santa Ana winds gusting to 25 mph.

Interstate 15 links southern California to Las Vegas.
